Why is it important to set up proper segmentation
You want to know how a predefined group of people behave over time.
The easiest way to do this is by setting up the segmentation right at the beginning of your Ahoy journey.
A valid argument to do this quickly is that we arenāt able to track segmentation back in time. Only from the moment, you set up the segment. Therefore we suggest creating these as soon as possible, so as not to miss out on important data.
Creating a segment is easy:
- Go to the member's tab
- Use one of the filters
- You will see the āsave as a segmentā button popping up
- Now give it a name (We suggest naming the segment according to its filers, so as not to get lost in segments later on)
- Save it, and youāre done (sometimes the members take a moment to be populated into the segment)
Segmentation vs tagging
The difference between segmentation and tagging is that segmentation is fully dynamic and will adapt whenever the filtered data field updates, while tagging is completely static
When to use tags?
When to use segmentation?
Tags come in handy when there is a group of users that do not change constantly.
For example internal employees, marketing teams, community teams, and so on.
Here is an article fully dedicated to tagging.
One handy option would be to create a segment that is based on Discord roles. Whenever a member in your Discord server receives that role, the segment in Ahoy will be automatically updated. You donāt want to keep updating tags manually, trust us on this one š
How granular can the segmentation be set?
As you may already have found out, the filtering is limited to the āandā condition only. We are working on the option to include the āorā functionality. Please bear with us. šš¼
If you want to be more granular, we suggest you mix tagging and segmentation.
Segmentation-related data sources
Weāve got a whole lot of resources available in the monitoring environment but here are the most powerful segmentation-related resources. This will make sure youāre able to keep track of KPI-relevant members over time, just as an example:
Segmentation FAQās
Once you start playing around with the different reports in the monitoring environment, you will see that the filters are pretty basic and limited. In order to create specific dashboards customised to member groups, creating these segments in the membersā tab will save you a lot of time and hassle
We can only start tracking segment behaviour from the moment you create the segment. Not retrospectively.
You canāt actually update the filters in an existing segment due to historical data being lost. Instead, we create a new segment and add the new filter. You can then decide if youād like to delete the old segment or not.
